convenience. This is most evident
when we go to the drive-thru when looking for a quick, easy, and cheap
meal. In these modern times it is
often difficult to eat foods that would be in keeping with the dietary plan of
the Okinawan masters of Shobayashi-Ryu.
The fast, convenient foods at the drive thru are usually full of
preservatives and are often fatty.
Below I have provided a few alternatives which are healthier choices
which you may find helpful.
I recently discovered a company called, “gopicnic”
which is the healthy answer to lunchables (which often have up to 50% of an
adults recommended sodium intake for the day in a single meal).
Gopicnic meals come in a variety of combinations and require no
refrigeration (I keep a few of these in my classroom just in case I forget the
lunch I’ve packed). These meals
still do contain more preservatives than you would get in a home-made meal, but
they are significantly healthier and more nutritious than fast food or other pre-packaged meals.

An alternative to the drive-thru fast food is Subway.
I’m sure we’ve all heard of Subway so I’ll spare you the description and
instead offer some advice.
1.
Skip the cheese when
ordering a sandwich. The few small slices of cheese on a sandwich do little to add flavor to
a sandwich but double the fat content of most sandwiches at Subway.
2.
Pile on the
veggies! Not
only do you get more food for the same amount of money when you add lots of
vegetables to your sub, you are also adding vitamins that are essential to good
health (especially for a martial artist).
3.
Go with wheat. Wheat bread has
several health benefits, but the most valuable ones for martial artist are that
wheat bread increases your energy and helps you to have strong
bones.
